Role of Advanced Nurse Practitioner

by Suzanne Levett, Nurse Practitioner

After 22 years in general practice, I have been fortunate enough to expand my role and responsibilities within primary care now working at Fairfi eld Surgery for the past 5 years. I have a background in district nursing and worked for a short while for Sussex Police as a forensic nurse gaining experience in more acute care.

As a Nurse Practitioner/Independent Prescriber my role is one of fi rst contact diagnosing and treating illnesses, prescribing medication, ordering and interpreting tests and making referrals on to secondary care.

I enjoy managing both acute and chronic conditions focusing on health promotion and disease prevention to improve health.

I run three minor illness/triage clinics a week, Monday,Tuesday and Wednesday, involving seeing patients face to face with conditions such as: coughs, chest infections, urine infections, dermatology including rashes, suspicious skin lesions, chronic disease management, asthma and diabetes. Paediatric illnesses: rashes, ENT problems, tonsillitis and ear infections. I have a particular interest in women’s health: contraception, HRT queries and breast lumps.
